Recently, the wife and I had a wonderful dinner at Absinthe to celebrate her birthday. Thanks to my good, good friend's connections, we were given a nice table in their wine cellar. Okay, okay, this isn't really a real wine cellar. Like in most restaurants, they have a little glass room in which the restaurant displays its wines. They have a table placed in this "wine cellar". It was kind of nice and throughout the dinner, the restaurant guests were taking envy glances at us.
The setting was romantic and the meal was great. We each ordered mushroom soup for starters and shared a serving of spanish ham. We were both amazed by the quality and portion of the mushroom soup; and mind you, we do eat out frequently in established french restaurants. I should say that that was the best mushroom soup I had in Singapore and it could have better some of that served by the restaurants over in Paris, Florence or Milan.
For the main course, my darling had grilled tenderloin and I had french-style braised pork belly. Both were excellent. I brought along a bottle of Nicolas Potel 2003 Chambertin which went superbly well with the pork belly especially with the fats...kekeke.
We rounded it up with a small delightful birthday cake, sorbet and coffee.
The only minor letdown was the big bouquet of flowers that I ordered. Too many stalks of flowers tightly bounded together; like a fat lady trying to get into a cheongsam.
